New Peugeot 308 (2021) – This is the final stretch for the third generation of compact Sochaux. It is currently fine-tuning its development before starting production in the spring of 2021. A few months before the official lifting of the veil, we know more about its appearance, as well as on-board technologies.
Never change a winning team. At the sight of prototypes recently immortalized by scoop hunters, the connection with the current opus seems obvious. The new Peugeot 308 2021 will take over the Germanic-inspired profile which greatly contributed to the move upmarket of the model that appeared in 2013.
At the time, it was for her to turn her back on the typical “minivan” silhouette of the very first 308 (2007), itself inherited from a certain 307 (2001), in favor of a line more classic. Very clearly, Peugeot made the choice to instill the genes of the Volkswagen Golf in its new baby. It is clear that the transplant has taken on successfully, probably giving birth to the most elegant Peugeot of the 10s.
Mouth more biting
In 2021, the successor model will moderately change its profile. So much so that the cutout of the side windows appears strictly identical to the current one. Lower down, the new Peugeot 308 will amplify the curves of its fenders and doors, but you’ll have to look towards the bow to observe the most radical changes. Starting with its flat hood, the outline of which is furiously reminiscent of that of the 508, or the large DS9 sedan. At the end of this opening, the three-digit surname of the Sochalienne will proudly stand above a renewed grille. Wider, it will incorporate the brand new Lion logo, seen in 2018 on the e-Legend concept car.
This new emblem, depicting only the head of the feline, within a badge similar to those of Ferrari and Porsche, will be placed at the top of a more indented grille. Like the recent restyled 3008 and 5008 SUVs, the air intake will seem to blend in with the main optics. At each of their ends, the inescapable vertical luminous fangs will complete the new identity of the 308, cuvée 2021.
New upgrade on board
On board, the new Lioness gives some indications of her physiognomy. The design of its dashboard will make ample reference to the codes of the 508. Like it, the 308 will adopt an imposing central armrest opening in two parts. Upstream of this storage space, the automatic gearbox variants should swap their gear lever against a minimalist push button inaugurated at PSA by the recent Citroën C4.
The steering wheel of the new Peugeot 308 2021 will be taken over from the 508 and other 3008/5008 SUVs. Except that it will display the new logo of the Franche-Comté firm. For the rest, the Golf and Mégane rival will secure the services of two digital panels, forming the i-Cockpit offer, including one housed in front of the drivers. A device recently adopted by the current 308, to support his end of career. Hopefully the multimedia system will be more responsive than the current one. Ergonomics side, the 308 2021 should operate a saving back. The most common controls (air conditioning, radio, etc.) will probably be assigned dedicated buttons, when the current model is still the subject of strong criticism. It requires its occupants to adjust these functions through menus integrated into the central touch screen. Or when the best is the enemy of the good.
Electrification on all floors
Under the hood of the new Peugeot 308, the focus will be on petrol units. The 100% thermal supply is expected to peak at around 150 hp, while the diesel range will shrink. On the Sochaux side, we intend to favor rechargeable hybridization. In order to democratize this expensive technology, a powertrain accumulating approximately 180 hp will be added to that of 225 hp. In the longer term, the 300 hp PHEV already available on the 3008 could serve in the bowels of a hypothetical sports variant. This 308 PSE (Peugeot Sport Engineered) would then benefit from all-wheel drive, even if it means cutting back on the boot space. Finally, it is rumored that the evolution of the EMP2 platform will also allow the development of a 100% electric module, in the coming years.
A station wagon and an SUV?
The versions of Peugeot 308 2021 will be legion. After the launch of the 5-door architecture, a 308 SW station wagon will follow suit, very quickly. It is also believed that an SUV extrapolation would be in the pipeline. It remains to be seen whether it will simply be a raised version, similar to a Ford Focus Active, or whether Peugeot will give it a separate name. Some rumors evoke a coupe SUV capable of rubbing shoulders with the Renault Arkana.
Peugeot 308 2021 price
If the holding of the Geneva Motor Show 2021 were to be confirmed (without the public, but open to journalists), the new Peugeot 308 would probably take its first steps there. Thereafter, it will likely be marketed before next summer. Its base price should turn around € 27,000, to match the grid practiced by the Golf. This would then be high inflation, compared to the current 308, available from € 24,300. But the recent price increase orchestrated by the restyled 3008 and 5008 raises fears of a similar revaluation for the compact. Peugeot must legitimize its status as a premium generalist manufacturer.
