In France, the time is not really for the production of city vehicles, which are not very inclined to be profitable. But when it comes to models with high added value in terms of sales margin, such as the Peugeot 3008, the future looks rather bright. PSA has officially confirmed the renewal of its assembly at the Sochaux plant, until 2030.
The laughing lion, the crying diamond
It was during an extraordinary CSE (Social Economic Committee), organized on May 26, that the management of the French group announced the news to the unions of the Franche-Comté site. An announcement that counterbalanced, the same day, with that relating to government support measures for the automotive industry. What is more, Renault unveiled at the same time its economic plan, of which we will especially note the significant reduction of the workforce planned in France (around 4,600 employees).
A juicy category
We can bet that the future Peugeot 3008, expected in 2023, will not be the only one to be produced in Sochaux. PSA could make it its main pole of competitiveness, in terms of compact SUVs. The plant will likely accommodate the production of the future Peugeot 5008 and Opel Grandland, based on the same platform. What about the next generations of Citroën C5 Aircross and DS 7 Crossback, respectively assembled in Rennes and Mulhouse? Not to mention that the merger with FCA (Fiat / Chrysler) will result in the sharing of this dedicated platform with future Fiat and Alfa Romeo SUVs.
Peugeot 3008 engines
This EMP2 base, currently used by the 3008, will be extended to the next opus. But PSA engineers will carry out a major overhaul so that the future Sochaux SUV converts to 100% electric propulsion, in addition to the thermal and plug-in hybrid units currently in the catalog. The future Peugeot e-3008, much larger than the e-208 and e-2008, will not be able to be satisfied with their 136 hp engine. Expect the arrival of a new electric powertrain, developing around 200 hp, to meet its family claims.
Always sharper style
The arrival of this third-generation Peugeot 3008 will be accompanied by a slight increase in its size. The bar of 4.50 m long could be crossed, while the current one extends to 4.45 m. Above all, however, we will notice the inauguration of a new, even sharper style. Its lines will undoubtedly be inspired by the Instinct concept car of 2017, to display a very wide grille surrounded by vertical light signatures.
Note that this new 3008 could be the first model in the range to adopt the new Peugeot logo. However, we will have to wait until 2022 to see the prototypes driving on the open road, to refine the illustration that we can offer you today. In the meantime, see you at the end of the year to discover the lines of the current Peugeot, revised, and corrected for its highly anticipated mid-career facelift.
