About a month ago we discovered the first images of the new Kia Sorento, a model that should have been presented a few days ago at the Geneva Motor Show but which, due to the circumstances that you all already know, could not be carried out. In any case and despite the obstacles, the machinery tries to continue working and, now, Kia reveals more images and more concrete details of the new Sorento.
Launched in 2002, the Kia Sorento reaches its fourth generation 18 years later with a very different image from the one it showed us for the first time and that this time it was inspired by the Telluride that is sold in North America, along with larger dimensions thanks in part to the new platform it uses and new engines, including hybrid drive.
If we start with its front we will see that the new Sorento also adopts the characteristic «tiger nose» grille but slightly modified to be specific to this model, wrapping headlights that transmit a unique look and that include daytime running lights. Lower down, the bumper includes a large fully horizontal lower air intake, which gives it a more robust appearance and further emphasizes its width, which has grown by 10mm from its predecessor.
Moving to the side will be where we will appreciate its new dimensions much better, with a length that also increases by 10 mm to 4,810 mm with shorter overhangs, but with a 35 mm longer wheelbase to reach 2,815 mm. Despite this, the new Kia Sorento continues to maintain details that have been with it for all generations, such as wheel arches with marked lines and an oversized D-pillar.
It will be in the rear where we will find greater similarities concerning the Telluride, especially in the design of its optical group, vertical and that is generously introduced on the side of the Sorento. As with the front, at the rear we also find horizontal design lines to emphasize that greater width, to which must be added a discreet spoiler and dual exhaust vents that are subtly hidden in the lower trim of the rear bumper. Finally, its exterior, note that it will be available in 10 shades for its body and wheels in sizes of 17, 18, 19 and 20 inches.
As has happened with the recent additions to the Kia catalog, in which an important leap in quality and interior design has been seen, the same is also the case in the new Sorento, in which its seven passengers will enjoy materials that combine metallic, with leather or satin-effect surfaces in relief. In the dashboard, much of this design revolves around the two digital screens that it incorporates, one of 12.3-inch fully digital for instrumentation and another, located in the center of the dashboard and intended for the infotainment and navigation system, 10, 25 inches. Just below the latter, surrounded on each side by the air vents, we find the controls for air conditioning.
As I said at the beginning, one of the strengths of the new Kia Sorento will be the use of a new platform that allows it, among other things, to offer greater comfort for all its occupants as well as greater capacity in its boot, even in the version hybrid, since the battery is under the floor of the cabin and does not detract from the capacity inside. In this sense, it should be noted that its trunk is one of the largest in the segment, with 821 liters of capacity, which decreases to 187 liters if we lift the third row of seats and even so it is still the best we will find.
To all this, we must add a large endowment technology, both standard and expandable through the catalog of options, with elements such as ambient lighting, wireless charger for smartphones, audio system with the 8-inch screen as standard or the BOSE sound system optional, USB connections spread throughout the cabin or head-up display among many other things. To this, we must logically add much other safety and driving aid systems, such as the new Smart Remote Parking Assistant, Front Collision Warning System, Rear Traffic Alert, Smart Remote Parking Assistant, 7 airbags or the Alert of Rear Traffic among others.
New mechanics, lighter and also hybrid
In the mechanical section, in Europe, the new Kia Sorento will incorporate a much lighter diesel block than its predecessor with four cylinders and 2,200 CC that delivers a power of 202 CV together with a torque of 440 Nm, linked to the 8DCT eight-speed wet clutch automatic transmission. For the moment the brand has not disclosed the consumption and emissions figures for this motorization, although they promise to do so as the launch date in Europe approaches.
To this motorization, it will be necessary to add another hybrid option, something that arrives for the first time at the Kia Sorento, consisting of a propulsion system in which a 1,600 CC T-GDi gasoline engine and a 44.2 kW electric motor are combined, resulting in a joint system power of 230 hp and 350 Nm of torque, which is sent through a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Along with this system, we will find a 1.49 kWh polymer and lithium-ion battery.
The new Kia Sorento is scheduled to launch on the European market from the third quarter, so it will be later when we know more specific figures, both consumption and prices, and versions.
