The pioneer of the Cupra brand is renewed to face a course in which it will be only one of the four options of the Spanish brand. We tell you how it goes! With a new look and more equipment, this is how the Cupra Ateca prepares for the increase in the family that this brand will experience. Ahead stands out its new front, in which the trapezoidal grille and the large air intakes of the bumper reinforce its aggressiveness, even though the headlights have not changed their shape although they are now full led.
A novelty is the incorporation of fog lamps, a request from many of the customers. At the rear, the rear diffuser that frames the four exhaust outlets changes, and now the LED pilots have dynamic turn signals. The 19-inch wheels are standard and there are no less than six models to choose from, all with the same size.
Inside the most striking thing is that now the bucket-type sports seats, with the integrated headrest, are standard, although they still do not have a longitudinal adjustment of the bench seat. There are subtle changes to the dashboard and door panels but a new element is the steering wheel with two large circular buttons, one to start the engine and the other to choose driving modes (Normal, Sport, Cupra, and Individual, in addition to one for snow and the other off-road), although if we make a long press it goes directly to Cupra mode, a clear nod to the competition model that at the same time reinforces sportiness and interior ergonomics.
The console switch that used to be used for ignition now allows us to disconnect the stability control. Behind the steering wheel, we now have somewhat larger paddles for the change that facilitate its handling.
No improvements needed
The 300-horsepower 2.0 TSI engine coupled to the seven-ratio DSG transmission and 4Drive all-wheel drive remains the heart of the Cupra Ateca. There are no technical changes and the suspension with adjustable dampers and progressive steering are standard. The technical options are still the Brembo brakes with perforated discs larger than the standard ones (370 millimeters in diameter at the front instead of the standard 340) with four-piston calipers painted in copper color and the Akrapovic exhaust, another clear wink. to the world of competition.
As for driving dynamics, there are no changes, at least announced by the brand, although now it has given us the impression that the suspension is somewhat less hard in Cupra mode than it was until now and with less difference in the tare between the different driving programs. Tremendously fast and effective on all types of roads, the excellent power-to-weight ratio of the Cupra’s eldest son makes his reactions so vivid and immediate that it surprises you if you get carried away by his compact SUV look and don’t expect the ways of a sports car. A sports car that does not demand a high level from its driver, since it is so controllable and easy to drive that it stimulates even the most peaceful of possible users who sit behind the wheel.
The multimedia system with a 9.2-inch screen now includes new possibilities since it has an integrated SIM card that will allow access to new features such as connected navigation with real-time traffic information. In addition to compatibility with Android Auto and Apple Car Play systems, the connection to the latter can now be done wirelessly, via Bluetooth, without the need for a cable as before, in addition to the fact that the Smartphone can also be charged wirelessly in the hole in the lower part of the center console. To all this, we must add the possibility of connecting remotely with the Cupra Ateca thanks to the Connect application.
The speech recognition system now works faster and “understands” natural language without the need for specific and perfectly vocalized commands. The multimedia system is complemented by the Digital Cockpit with a 10.25 ”screen that allows different configurations, from the most traditional with two watches for the lap counter and speedometer to the more sporty CUPRA, with the possibility of seeing the indications of the navigation system in the instrument panel itself.
The already complete safety equipment that the Cupra Ateca had until now is now enriched with new driving aids, among which stand out the adaptive and predictive cruise control, capable of adjusting the speed when reading the limitation signals speed, and the pre-collision assistant, which in case of detecting an imminent accident tightens the seat belts, closes the windows and the sunroof and activates the emergency lights.
Cupra Ateca 2021 Price
The new Cupra Ateca will arrive at dealerships in September and although its price has not yet been notified, it should not be much higher than that of the current model, which starts at 45,550 euros.
